Long Winter

Today is the first day we will rise above freezing in what has been an exceptionally cold and snowy winter, even by Canadian standards. The snow is already starting to melt a little. Everything has been imprisoned by the weight of the snow and ice.

That’s a little bit like what abuse does to us, isn’t it? We lock our emotions deep under a frosty exterior. The difference is that the emotional winter caused by abuse can last a lifetime. The type of abuse does not really matter, but the abuse that children suffer seems particularly damaging.

A child that is abused by a loved one, or a stranger has a piece of their life stolen from them. The innocent child becomes the damaged victim. Before they even learn to love and be loved, they are frozen. All they know is that they cannot trust anybody. This might have long lasting repercussions, right? I would go much further and say that it will cause lifelong damage.

The best way to prevent child abuse is awareness. If you see something that you think is not right, contact your local child protection agency. Physical and sexual abuse is not ok. It is your business. Kids cannot protect themselves, and should not have to.
